Your comment on the EU having a negative impact on software development is not true. Personally I like the browser choice screen. Aside from my personal preference, there was no reason why the EU's actions on it lead to stifling innovation and making software more expensive. It just didn't happen.

Good legislation would demand minimum time, man hours for API's that are important.

Great article and timely. In my first job of app dev using win SDK toolkit, my manager used to drill into us the importance of defining interfaces. he made us write/draw the interface and the # of ways in which they inter-act and the outcomes of each such interaction. Today, when the biz world is awash in APIs, the so called API economy, the importance of good API design is a must for business growth, because API adoption depends on the ease of use and biz goals of APIs.
